As I began to spend more time in our garden this year, I started noticing wires, rope and canvas belts throughout the yard.
The previous owners had used all these bindings to manipulate the plants, to get them to bend or not to bend or to grow a certain way.
From what I can see, most of these contraptions did not do their job, no matter how they were rigged.
I’ve been going around and cutting (in a couple cases, sawing) rope and wire, clearing the garden of the unnecessary clutter and allowing the plants to go their own way.
The only tying up we’ve done is a giant spider web-like thing to hold on a large broken limb from our Japanese red maple. It has grafted the limb back onto the tree. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

That’s pretty cool. There is certainly an argument to use ties and ropes and things, but I think the former owners went a little overboard.

Good for you, Lani! Love the idea of letting the trees be free to grow however they want to grow. I have to be honest, with the exception of the second to last picture, I have never seen any of these contraptions before. I think it’s kind of strange (no offense to the previous neighbors, I’m sure their intentions were pure and they had to have gotten the idea from somewhere!).

I know, very strange and there were several more that I didn’t take photos of! They were all over the place. They kept a very immaculate house. Everything was in tip top shape when we moved in. Possibly they felt they needed more control over the garden as well. I can be a little OCD as well so I get that, but I wouldn’t go that far.
